South Wales/Southwest UK-based pop-rock band Say It Anyway is back with a true earworm, releasing their brand-new single, Mascara Mess, on 23rd January 2025. Following the upbeat summer hit Vampires, the band now takes a deeper dive into raw emotion and powerful storytelling.
This emotional rock track is powered by poignant lyrics and a compelling performance from lead singer Meg, adding a new level of intensity to the band’s trademark sound. With its striking lyrics, “told myself I wouldn’t fall for you, but I’m a mascara mess on the ground”, the song beautifully encapsulates the blend of vulnerability, strength, and bittersweet love, while, as we’ve come to learn, this clever lyrical wordplay influenced and inspired the entire songwriting process.
“Mascara Mess is for anyone who ever thought they’d be the exception; for anyone who ever thought their strength was in the hiding, in the suppressing, in the pretending,” Meg shared about the track.
Fun Fact Alert!
Mascara Mess came to life during a 3-day writing retreat in the Welsh wilderness, where the band booked an Airbnb. They packed up their recording facilities, and spent the time creating music, cooking, and hanging out. This retreat didn’t just inspire Mascara Mess, as two other tracks from that magical getaway are coming soon!
