We take a closer look on the hungarian black metal band OMNS’ debuting album Facilis Descenus Averni. Come with us in the fifth epsiode of On The Horizon!
Band: OMNS
Album: Facilis Descensus Averni (2021)
Genre: Black Metal
The backstory of OMNS: It started when they were 17 years old, they formed a melodic death metal band under the name of Sore Faction. They held concerts, went to talent shows but after a while being a young adult kicked in with everything that comes with it. The passion faded, the priorities changed. In the coming years there was a lurking desire for continuing which boosted the inspiration. The ideas were piling on top of each other until they bursted: thus the first album has been born!
Current members*:
- Tamás Novák: guitar, songwriting
- Attila Korsós: vocal
*After the first album the band gained new members: András Szegvári (drums), András Kemény (guitar), Bálint Pető (piano)
The Facilis Descenus Averni and the band’s second album
Tamás Novák, guitarist and songwriter of OMNS talked about the making of Facilis Descensus Averni:
“The first album was written and made by me, the vocal was best fitted with Attila Korsós’ voice, he expressed the majesty, the disgust, anger, bestiality and the human heart perfectly.”
After that Tamás started to talk about the second album:
“I wrote the second one in parallel to the first one, we will start the recordings in September. We will work on it in full number in a friendly spirit.”
Facilis Descensus Averni – according to Tamás – is about descending to Hell, the tasting, devouring and vomiting of it, followed by ascension. In the end it’s a realisation about that is evil really wrong or just a necessary building quality.
„Heaven and Hell are not destinations we reach, they are a condition of our soul which we live through, ever-changing throughout our lives.”
– Tamás Novák, the guitar-song writer of OMNS about the aspect of the album.
What should you know about Facilis Descensus Averni? „The lyrics and the music were born out of 12 years of personal and social clashes, it was completed in 8 months. The album unifies the experience of living through „allness”, extracting it from the interaction of matter and mind to wash away the sharp border between good and bad. The goal is to accept the filth under the surface of disgust and turd to reshape it into constructive spiritual substance.”
OMNS – Facilis Descensus Averni (Full Album)
In the spotlight: Facilis Descensus Averni! What kind of tracks can we expect? The album heavily leans on the black metal genre, taking elements from it’s many offsets. The opening song of the album is the closest to my heart, invoking atmospheric black metal with the acoustic guitars and the fading talking in the background, also the rattles giving a heavy atmosphere. In some parts the characteristics of progressive black metal appear, for example the ear-catching melodiousness and clear singing, also the scratchiness of blackaned death metal is something the guys are familiar with. Although, mostly it is the melodic death metal that has the most influence in the album, having smaller or larger parts in every song. If you would like to get familiar with the black metal genre then Facilis Descensus Averni is an excellent choice for you. You will find a track that fits your taste.
The track you shouldn’t miss out: Dry Matter Remains is the peak of the album at least for me! It represents the diversity of the album in one song perfectly. It formes a great fusion between the slower melancholic atmosphere with clean vocal parts and the crushing yet heartbreaking instrumental segments in which the genre’s unique mark, the bone cracking black metal rattles take part. If you only listen to one song from them, this ought to be it.
