Why should you give „Better Days” a chance? Currents’s third record ‘They Way It Ends’ had a rightful claim of being ’best album of the year’. Every songs are colorful, well made and full of emotions. Because of that it is not an easy job to pick the best. ‘Kill The Ache’ or ‘How I Fall Apart’ both could deserve their own article but today another track gets the attention, the album-closing song: ‘Better Days’.
An ending always has an important part. In movies when the protagonist fulfills their destiny or we see glimpse of what to come or we get a radical, sudden end where we have more questions than answers. Also in the end of a book where the last pages there is usually something that is probably more memorable than the middle of the book. It is the same with music. The first and the last songs of an album have aparticular place in the whole of a record. They are made to catch our attention and give a perfect finale. The opening song ‘Never There’ build the perfect atmosphere for ‘The Way It Ends’. The ideal end time feeling doesn’t fade away, it stays with us till the last track ‘Better Days’. The outro of the song (which will be analyzed later) puts the icing on the cake and increases everything we experienced on the album until that moment. If you are interested in metalcore/djent than for that 1 minute it is worth to get familiar with Currents newest album. A massive pleasure!
‘Better Days’ starts with a calm, simple instrumental part which quickly changes into a short but intense segment. The electronic guitar plays in the background which gives the backbone of the song with the vocal and the riffs. This intensity change stays until the end of the songs. The drum helps these changes, basically having an essential part. The bass playing simoltaneously with the electric guitar cannot avoid our attention because of the brutal riffs they produce. We can hear these riffs between the first verse and the pre-chorus, after the second verse in the post-chorus and in the outro. We can say that ‘Better Days’ doesn’t lack better and better riffs.
Another strength of the track and the whole album is the vocal. Brian Ville’s cleans and screams give something different in each song but they do have one thing in common: their message has a heart-shaking effect. The clean vocal is marvelous and fits ‘Better Days’ lyrics greatly. The chorus is ear-catching, it sums up what the band wants to tell us and not to mention it refers to the cover of ‘The Way It Ends’. The clean and the scream parts changes each other just like I mentioned before with the riffs. Sometimes the vocal gives us a clean feeling more than a dirty one which isn’t a bad thing because it results in a more colorful music. One of the most memorable part is the last minute’s vocal which starts with the post-chorus, especially with the lyrics. ‘Better Days’ (and The Way It Ends itself) bites us and doesn’t let us go, it gets to the point, doesn’t want to avoid reality. If you haven’t already heard it then you should definitely check it out. If you love metalcore than surely you won’t regret it.

Lyrics:
Do you ever want to waste away
Recounting better times?
I’m with you
Is this all we have left to live with?
I only wanna get by
So with that, I don’t mind
Getting by
Reliving moments lived till my last breath
Do you get it?
Suffocating, can’t breathe but you’ve got a fucking mouth to feed
Never made the effort to change or go out of our way
You follow your sorrows
For better days we’ve waited for how long
How long?
You follow your sorrows
We spiral downward endlessly
But is the bottom where we’re meant to be?
Is anybody listening?
Can anybody tell me
Why I can’t get up?
Why can’t I get up?
Down on my knees as the world comes falling down
My fear: chained to the ground
For my will is weak
And my state is bleak
But I’m bound to break free
Pride running through my veins
My chains lay flat around me
My chains lay flat around me
How long
Do we endure the pain?
How long
‘Till we accept
You follow your sorrows
For better days we’ve waited for how long
How long?
You follow your sorrows
We spiral downward endlessly
But is the bottom where we’re meant to be?
This isn’t where we’re meant to be
We spiral endlessly
You follow your sorrows
For better days we’ve waited for how long
How long?
You follow your sorrows
We spiral downward endlessly
But is the bottom where we’re meant to be?
