Why should you give Warflower a chance? The band’s atmosphere is quite unique and attention-worth at least for me but this track is the one that truly got a place in my heart. I always appreciate a well-made intro and if it can keep that quality through the whole song then it becomes memorable. It isn’t an accident that this track has become the most popular song of this (to my deepest grief) lesser known band. It is a 6 and a half minute long energy bomb with a beautiful solo, also we can hear the founding singer’s, Ray Schuler’s (who passed away in 2011) magnificent voice.
The vocal and the instrumental has a continous scaling. A very subtle start with a pleasant acoustic guitar to which a simple drum rhythm is added, finally comes an almost cry like vocal that is supported by multiple instruments. There is another calmer part in the solo almost like in the intro. The electric guitar which almost sounds like a persistent scream is interrupted by an intense vocal segment. This intensity stays with us until the end leaving an endless void so that I find myself hitting the replay button again and again.
I highly recommend everyone to experience this euphoric feeling, especially if you like more abstract progressive rock. Also if you have the time you ought to check out the band’s other works!
Genre: Progressive rock/alternative rock
Band: The Mayan Factor (USA)
Song: Warflower
Album: In Lake’ Ch (2003)
Lyrics:
Rain falling around me
Can’t tell if weather is warm
Or why I am cold
Fame falls all around me
Can’t tell if I should just hide or run
Some people hold onto their misery
A token of their lives
Painted faces, warlike, they march on
Feel the end near, blinding and screaming
For blood they’d do anything
Got two tickets to Peridon, just can’t sleep
I’ve got no reason to worry ’cause it’s just a dream
On my way to the classroom
Lit the fire
It’s a burning desire
Murder
Water is needed
Hate seems always following
Can’t tell if I can run
Can’t find my way outside
Hate seems always following
Can’t tell if I should just run or hide
Some people hold onto their misery
A token of their lives
Painted faces, warlike, they march on
Feel the end near, blinding and screaming
For blood they’d do anything
Got two tickets to Peridon, just can’t sleep
I’ve got no reason to worry ’cause it’s just a dream
On my way to the classroom
Lit the fire
It’s a burning desire
Murder
Water is needed
Water is needed
Water is needed
Hey-ay-ay-ay
Got two tickets to Peridon, just can’t sleep
I’ve got no reason to worry ’cause it’s just a dream
On my way to the classroom
Lit the fire
It’s a burning desire
Murder
Water is needed
Water is needed
Tickets to Peridon
Peridon
Peridon, ay
What should you know about The Mayan Factor? The band’s atmosphere is heavily influenced by folkish, ethnical vibes, as their name might suggest they try to invoke shamanic feelings with the conga and drum. Also they like to use all kind of acoustic elements, mainly in the intros. They also like to take inspiration from other bands. For example in their Focus-Reborn song we can hear a little Riders On The Storm, but they also refer to nu-metal quite often. Their lyrics’ are abstract with natural soundings and they like to add pop cultural references too (for example: Jack Nicholson)
They have released 3 albums so far (In Lake’ Ch, 44, Yesterday’s Son), but after the death of Ray Schuler they stopped for some years. Their last album was released in 2012. After the break they returned with a new singer Lenny Cerzoise Jr., their last track Peace was released in 2020 bringing the usual quality.
